MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

Tuakana Literacy Group have been busy. They are learning the tikanga of using flax and learning new skills. Patience and resilience are two skills that always need reinforcing. Learning how to plait was a real challenge, and after a couple of days it became easier. By the end of the term they will have accomplished:
- Learning tikanga on how to harvest harakeke
- Creating a simple 3-Plait
- Weaving a flower
- Weaving a simple mat
- and for those nimble weavers – Preparation and making of Kono (a four cornered bowl)
Our tamariki have also made Tomato Relish using excess tomatoes we had at school. Check out the label. If you would like a jar of relish it only costs $6.00, no additives and pure and natural. Let Whaea Lyn know.
KI-O-RAHI tournament date is: Tuesday 28th November or Wednesday 29th November if weather is not good. We will keep you informed.
KIWI HOOPS BASKETBALL PROGRAMME for our juniors
Currently we have a snap shot programme of Kiwi Hoops in school so that our students can get a taste of Basketball. Scott Richardson, the Community Development Officer, Capital Zone Basketball Trust, Basketballs Regional Sport Organisation – Greater Wellington Region is coordinating this. Our tamariki are enjoying the opportunity and the teachers say
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
22 of our children are regularly late coming to school. Nine of our children are too often absent. Valuable learning time is being lost. Our school heads the statistics in the valley for the highest unexplained absences from school. That is certainly not a record we are proud of and it has a huge impact on the learning of our tamariki. Lost time each day, adds up to missed opportunities. I have attached a great site with some handy tips on legal responsibilities but also suggestions and strategies that may be useful.

A hard copy of the STUDENT ABSENCE Policy (Draft) is being sent home for your perusal and I would appreciate your feedback. How can we work together to reduce these absences? An electronic copy may also be found on our school website. Ring Lyn at the school office, text me and I can ring you back, or send a note to school with your whakaaro. Our school, Attendance Pamphlet, one for each family reinforcing the importance of getting our children to school to learn with their peers will also be sent home. We will be able to provide feedback for you at our next Whānau Engagement Hui on 29 November.
SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
This will now be sent home every Friday. Copies are also posted up on our website http://www.natone.school.nz so you can catch up at your leisure. If you would like a copy emailed to you, please let Whaea Lyn know and she will add you to the list.
SECURITY CAMERAS / VANDALISM
Yes indeed, we have had to replace security cameras to help us monitor activity at our school during the school day and after hours. If we need to, video footage will be shared with our Community Police to take further action. We want to protect our school asset for our tamariki, we also need to protect our children.
THE SCHOOL GATES
The school gates on the MALL side will be LOCKED every day from 9.15 to 2.15pm. Parents please do not jump over the gates. Go to the front entrance of the school and let Lyn know that you are needing to see your child. She will give you a green card to take to the classroom so that the teacher knows you have been to the office first. We need to know who is on the school grounds and we are responsible for the safety of all our children. Go to the front entrance please.

GARDEN CLUB
Rosalind Jiko is unable to come back to school as her new job at the Botanic Gardens will take up her time. We will need to make sure we look after the vegetables and carry on the wonderful skills she has taught our children. We will still keep in touch with her and I am thinking it would be wonderful for us to go and visit her sometime in the new year. Certainly something to think about.
